PII Redaction — AI Glossary
Removing or anonymizing personally identifiable information from text before sending to LLM APIs or storing outputs.
Overview
PII redaction replaces detected PII with placeholders ([NAME], [EMAIL]) or synthetic equivalents. Used to comply with data residency requirements (EU data must not leave EU) and prevent training data leakage. Proxied API architectures (LLM gateway) can apply redaction transparently. Desensitization must maintain semantic coherence for the LLM to be useful.
